(Reuters) -One person was killed on Sunday when an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck northwestern Turkey's Balikesir province, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, adding 29 people were wounded and 16 buildings collapsed.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has struck Turkey’s northwestern province of Balikesir, killing at least one person and causing about a dozen buildings to collapse.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed an 81-year-old citizen died after being rescued from a collapsed building. Twenty-nine others were injured but none were in life-threatening conditions. Initial assessments revealed 16 buildings collapsed across 68 neighborhoods due to the earthquake and aftershocks.
