President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on India as punishment for importing Russian oil, according to a document posted on the White House website — an escalation of his trade battle with New Delhi and his first use of so-called secondary sanctions on countries the US says are fueling Moscow’s war machine.

The U.S. government argues that India’s continued direct and indirect imports of Russian oil undermine sanctions placed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

President Trump on Wednesday announced he would increase tariffs on India by 25 percent over its purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total tariffs he has imposed on New Delhi to 50 percent.
