Millions of Americans are enduring howling winds, whiteout conditions and treacherous roads after an early punch of winter cold brought the first major snow of the season.
Intense lake-effect snow is hammering Chicago Monday morning and creating dangerous travel conditions as a record November cold snap reaches as far south as Florida.

Arctic sea ice has declined by more than 42% since 1979, when regular satellite monitoring began. As the ice grows thinner and recedes, more water is exposed to sunlight. Ice reflects sunlight but dark water absorbs it,
“After a seasonably cool afternoon with highs in the upper-40s to mid-50s, temperatures will take quite the tumble tonight with lows dropping into the upper 20s and low-30s!,” the National Weather Service said early Monday. “Add in the wind and minimum wind chill values will crater into the upper-teens to low-20s!”
Expect more activity in the Arctic ocean in spring 2026, when the ice melts. But how quickly the region opens up depends on several factors
