Government shutdown: Detroit Metro Airport offering free food to employees working without pay
Federal workers at Detroit Metro and Willow Run can spend up to $20 a day on food and drinks at DTW restaurants and stores.
In 2024, DTW saw nearly 33 million passengers, a 4.83% increase year-over-year. However, the airport still has not cracked pre-pandemic numbers, which peaked in 2019 at 36,769,279 annual passengers, according to Wayne County Airport Authority data from 2004 to 2024.
Many international airports offer spaces for smokers (and vapers) to light up inside the terminals. But, thanks to clean indoor air laws adopted over the years in many cities and states, smoking of any kind is prohibited inside most airport facilities in the U.S. Designated smoking areas — if they exist — are outside.
Federal employees can receive up to $20 per day for food and beverages at retailers in the Evans and McNamara terminals.
Tuesday marked the first day without pay for some federal employees, including FAA air traffic controllers, a union said.
