In an email sent to Newsweek in January, the FDA said, "Most recalls in the U.S. are carried out voluntarily by the product manufacturer and when a company issues a public warning, typically via news release, to inform the public of a voluntary product recall, the FDA shares that release on our website as a public service.
Wegmans has recalled two mixed-nut products due to potential Salmonella contamination. The store-brand nuts were sold in multiple sizes with sell-by dates in late 2026. The recall notice doesn't specify the source of the contamination.
On November 18, the FDA published a recall from Mangalm for all Tops Mixed Fruit Jam and Tops Strawberry Jam Products due to undeclared carmoisine, an unapproved color additive that can pose health concerns to consumers, the FDA said. The products were sold in Utah, Portland, Washington and California.
At the same time, Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) food recalls fell by 60.0 percent to just six events, down from 15 in Q2. However, like the FDA, the number of units in those FSIS recalls also surged by an astounding 5,511.8 percent from 1.04 million pounds last quarter to 58.52 million pounds this quarter.
Responding to the FDA report, Great Lakes Cheese said in early October that a supplier of low-moisture part-skim mozzarella cheese notified it of a recall, and Great Lakes Cheese immediately isolated the affected raw material in its facilities and took action to remove packaged goods containing this item.
The shredded cheese manufacturer, Great Lakes Cheese Co. of Hiram, Ohio, initiated the voluntary recall back in October, saying the products may be contaminated with metal fragments, which may cause internal injuries if consumed.
