Doug Martin, the former All-Pro running back for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died at age 36, his family said in a statement Sunday.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin battled mental-health issues, and his relatives were seeking medical assistance before he died, the family said.

"Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run," the family's statement said.
