The GOP battle for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas is shaping up to be a very tight contest about three and a half months before the March primary. Various polls show Senator John Cornyn, who's seeking a fifth term, is very close to his two challengers, Attorney General Ken Paxton and Houston Congressman Wesley Hunt.
Quoting from an earlier court decision, Republican Secretary of State Jane Nelson wrote in her filing that a court ruling on the GOP lawsuit now, just before the March primaries, threatens to “confuse voters, unduly burden election administrators, or otherwise sow chaos or distrust in the electoral process.”
Texas Republicans recently filed a lawsuit to close primary elections and restrict voting in GOP contests to those formally registered with the party. Their stated goal is to prevent Democrats or Independents from influencing Republican nominations and to ensure nominees reflect the values of the party’s base.
