"Emilia Pérez" is certainly the most talked-about Oscar contender of the year, for better and worse. The Spanish-language musical gained significant awards steam when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year and won the Jury Prize alongside a shared Best Actress for its three leading ladies.

At the Oscars in 2020, Netflix put its campaigning weight behind Martin Scorsese's gangster epic The Irishman. That film earned 10 nominations, but failed to win a single award. Five years later, though,
