We write to you regarding the imminent threat of sanctions from the United States targeting the International Criminal Court (ICC) and to call for urgent action from the European Union (EU) and its member states to defend the court through the activation of the EU’s Blocking Statute.

The Biden administration, Republicans and many Democrats have argued the ICC has no jurisdiction. Still, Washington has generally supported the ICC arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin related to his deporting children for the war in Ukraine.

The Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act comes out of House Republicans' staunch support of Israel in its war against Hamas, which has divided Democrats.
