One person was killed on Sunday when an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck northwestern Turkey's Balikesir province, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, adding 29 people were wounded and 16 buildings collapsed.

More than 200 aftershocks hit western Turkey on Monday, hours after a 6. 1-magnitude earthquake struck the region.

The earthquake, with an epicenter in the town of Sindirgi, sent shocks that were felt some 125 miles to the north in Istanbul, a city of more than 16 million people.
