Rory McIlroy came within a whisker of his second Genesis Scottish Open title, but ultimately finished two strokes behind a surprising winner.
Chris Gotterup, an unheralded pro in his second PGA Tour season, topped world No. 2 Rory McIlroy to win the Scottish Open.
Rory McIlroy couldn’t hide his disdain for the conditions at the Scottish Open. “The greens are so s–t,” McIlroy said Sunday on a hot mic as he missed a putt wide during his final round at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland.
The Genesis Scottish Open had one of the strongest fields of the year, and the perks are far greater. Gotterup, who played three years at Rutgers and won player-of-the-year awards as a senior at Oklahoma, gets into the Masters for the first time next April.
The duo was tied entering the back nine, but McIlroy failed to convert a birdie putt as Gotterup finished with three birdies and a bogey.
