It's not the sun getting to you. These are Atlantic black sea hares (Aplysia morio), a type of sea slug. Unlike snails, sea hares don't have an external shell and can release bright purple ink to deter predators when disturbed. While it's common to see large (10-12") sea hares on Treasure Coast beaches in the summer, this week’s sightings are a bit earlier than usual and feature smaller sea hares (3-4").
