Audie Murphy was born on June 20, 1925, in the community of Kingston, Texas, located in Hunt County, just north of Greenville. He grew up on farms in the Farmersville and Greenville areas, and near Celeste, Texas.   While not born in Greenville itself, Murphy enlisted in the U.S. Army at the downtown Greenville post office in 1942.
