Although botanists are discovering new species of cycads, they are becoming extinct; the main threats to the cycads are habitat destruction and the harvesting of the plant. It was discovered in the 1990s and is considered one of the most elegant cycads due to its finely divided, feathery fronds. Cycads are well-represented at RBG Victoria (Melbourne). Here we see the supremely large female cones of Lepidozamia peroffskyana, one of only two species in the genus (both of which are native to Australia). From Wikipedia we learn: “Lepidozamia peroffskyana is a palm-like cycad in the family Zamiaceae. It is endemic to eastern Australia, primarily near the coast of New South Wales.
