The Spanish GP was the eighth and final round of the 1951 calendar, and three drivers entered the race vying for the title: Juan Manuel Fangio, leading the field with his Alfa Romeo; Alberto Ascari and his Ferrari, two points behind; and José Froilán González, also driving a Ferrari, six points behind Fangio. Pirelli provided the teams with tires for 18-inch wheels, which Alfa Romeo adopted. Ferrari, however, decided to stick with 16-inch
